Acting Rent Control boss Frederick Opoku questions Prestige Hostel over rent hike

The Acting Rent Control Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has cautioned Prestige Hostel over alleged unjustified rent increments following complaints from student groups. The warning came after a petition by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and NATUG, prompting an inspection. During the visit, Mr. Opoku questioned the hostel’s rent structure, citing charges of about GH₵3,600 for four-in-one rooms and GH₵4,900 for two-in-one rooms, alongside separate electricity payments. He challenged management to justify the increments, describing them as excessive and potentially non-compliant with regulatory procedures. He warned that any rent adjustments must be approved by the Rent Control Department and urged the hostel to suspend the new charges pending review, cautioning that failure to comply could attract consequences.
