Beyond the lecture hall: why many students are chasing online income

For many university students today, attending lectures and completing assignments are no longer their only priorities. Increasingly, students are turning to online businesses, content creation, affiliate marketing, freelancing and other digital opportunities in search of additional income. With the rising cost of transportation, food, accommodation and academic materials, some students see online work as a way to support themselves while pursuing their education.
Social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp have made it easier for young people to promote products and services without needing a physical shop. Some students advertise clothes, cosmetics, food, digital products and other goods online, while others earn money through content creation and affiliate marketing. For these students, the internet has become more than a platform for entertainment; it has also become a potential source of livelihood.
However, the pursuit of online income is not without challenges. Some students struggle to balance their businesses with lectures, assignments and examinations. Others are attracted by online opportunities that promise quick and easy money, only to discover that some require significant time, skill or investment. The growing popularity of online income opportunities has therefore created a need for students to distinguish legitimate opportunities from misleading schemes.
Despite these challenges, the digital economy continues to create opportunities for students to develop entrepreneurial and professional skills. For many young people, the goal is not necessarily to choose between education and making money, but to find a way to combine both. As technology continues to influence everyday life, the university student of today is increasingly becoming not only a learner, but also a potential entrepreneur in the digital space.
