Beyond the suggestion box: is the student voice really being heard?

Students are at the heart of every university, yet one question deserves more attention: How much influence do students really have on decisions that affect their university experience? From academic policies and campus facilities to accommodation, transportation, technology, and student welfare, students experience these issues every day. Universities may provide surveys, student representatives, town hall meetings, and other platforms for feedback. However, giving students an opportunity to speak is only the first step. What matters is whether their concerns are genuinely considered and whether meaningful action follows. When students repeatedly raise concerns without seeing change, they may become discouraged from participating. Student engagement should, therefore, go beyond simply collecting opinions. Students can contribute valuable ideas because they understand the everyday realities of campus life. At the same time, students also have a responsibility to use available platforms respectfully and constructively. A university becomes stronger when communication works in both directions. Students should not only be recipients of decisions; they should also have opportunities to contribute to the conversations that shape their university experience.
