Peer pressure: the silent influence on people

Imagine standing in a group where everyone is doing something you know is wrong, but staying silent feels harder than giving in. Peer pressure is that uncomfortable moment. It quietly, yet convincingly, urges people to change who they are to fit in. Peer pressure is an ongoing challenge that affects decision-making, behaviour, and a person's sense of identity. Peer pressure occurs when we want to fit in, influencing others in our social group to take part in behaviours they might not want to engage in. According to child and adolescent psychiatrist Akeem Marsh, MD, “it's very easy to be influenced by peer pressure as we humans are wired as social creatures.” During adolescence, the brain undergoes changes that prioritize friendships and social information. Specifically, certain areas of the social brain, such as the temporoparietal junction and posterior superior temporal sulcus, play a key role in processing social cues and motivating prosocial behaviour. Peer pressure is often seen as something negative, forcing people to make choices they later regret. However, some forms of peer pressure can lead to positive outcomes; encouraging good behaviour, academic excellence, healthy habits, and personal growth. Whether peer pressure becomes harmful or helpful depends on the choices we make and the values we choose to uphold. It's normal to worry about being influenced too much or selling out one’s values to fit in. It’s also common for someone to feel unable to decline when pressured to engage in risky behaviour. Peer pressure may be powerful, but it does not have to control our lives. People who genuinely care about you will respect your choices and support your values instead of forcing you to change who you really are. Remember, your individuality is more valuable than conformity. It’s better to be authentically yourself than to lose sight of who you are just to impress others.
