The moment people start giving back

People grow in stages. First, you learn. Then you build a life. Then something shifts. You begin to give. Across campuses, communities, and cities, people quietly step into a phase of life where they offer their time and energy to causes larger than themselves. Volunteering often appears small, but it reflects a deeper part of human development, the moment when individuals move from receiving support to becoming support for others. For many people, this stage begins earlier than expected. Sometimes it starts in the same places where they first learned, their schools. I first encountered this idea in junior high school. A senior who had graduated before my class introduced a project called iVolunteere. After writing the Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE, graduates returned to the school to give their time to the students coming after them. Some volunteered to help teach subjects they were good at. Others assisted teachers during lessons, helped maintain the school compound, or worked on the school farm. It was not a large organisation or a national programme. It was simply former students choosing to support the same school that had shaped them. Watching that happen made volunteering feel less like a distant concept and more like a natural step. The students had completed one chapter of their education, yet they came back, not as learners, but as helpers. Moments like this show how volunteering grows alongside people. It begins with small acts. A few hours of teaching. Helping with school work. Offering time where it is needed. Later in life, the same instinct shows up again. University students support community projects. Professionals use their skills to assist organisations. Older adults mentor younger people and support causes in their communities. Volunteering, then, becomes more than an occasional act of kindness. It reflects a stage in human development where people begin to understand that their time, knowledge, and effort can shape lives beyond their own. Every society moves forward because people reach this moment, the quiet moment when they decide to give back.
